Withington Wilderness

One of the world's leading centers for astronomical research

International Dark Sky Week is April 19 - 26


  • 25 miles west of Magdalena located in the Plains of San Agustin just below Mount Withington.

  • The VLA is a World premier astronomical radio observatory.

  • Consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration on the plains of San Agustin fifty miles west of Socorro, New Mexico.

  • The data from the antennas is combined electronically to give the resolution of an antenna 36 km (22 miles) across, with the equivalent sensitivity of a dish 130 meters (422 ft) in diameter.

  • Cost of entry is affordable at just $6 for adults and $5 for seniors. Kids 17 and under are free.

  • The VLA celebrated their 40th birthday in the year 2020.
